How has C.I.R.C.L.E.S. impacted your life as a participant?

C.I.R.C.L.E.S. has given me the ability to be more optimistic and enjoy life on a daily basis. Before C.I.R.C.L.E.S., as a single father, I was overwhelmed and barely keeping my head above water. I felt I was living without direction and had no idea of what my future could hold. With the support of C.I.R.C.L.E.S., making new relationships and peer guidance, I now see a future full of possibilities for myself and my children. At first, I saw Denise, JD, and the Allies as teachers, now I see them as friends. Without this connection, I could not see my potential, and I am so very grateful to be a part of the C.I.R.C.L.E.S. family.

What brought you to C.I.R.C.L.E.S.?

I joined C.I.R.C.L.E.S. approximately five years ago during a time of personal transition. I was approaching unemployment as my hospital-owned midwifery practice was closing just after I had earned my doctorate degree in nursing practice. That experience provided me with time and the motivation to join C.I.R.C.L.E.S. I had the opportunity to participate in Phase I, learning along with other allies and participants. It was in this class that I formed bonds with all of the members of our cohort, and I learned that there were many types of poverty. Some of the members experienced financial poverty or a history of addiction or abuse. Other members endured isolation, and emotional, social, or spiritual poverty. The class material and time we shared were very enlightening. I am very excited about the future of C.I.R.C.L.E.S. I have been very blessed, my life has been enriched by this experience.

Chris' response on how C.I.R.C.L.E.S. has helped him.

Before I came to C.I.R.C.L.E.S., I felt hopeless. I socially isolated myself due to issues with low self-worth. I lacked confidence in my abilities. I was working various dead-end jobs because I had no direction. However, I was eager to learn and improve my life. I only wanted a safe environment for my beautiful daughter and an opportunity to return to school and further my education.

C.I.R.C.L.E.S. has provided the support and guidance I was looking for. Since C.I.R.C.L.E.S., I am now aware of my path, and my direction is clear. My emotional well-being has improved dramatically. I have become more comfortable advocating for myself and my daughter. I feel very connected to my community now, and I have confidence in the social support I receive from my C.I.R.C.L.E.S. family.

Participant Dawnyel shares what life was like before C.I.R.C.L.E.S.

As a recovering addict, with six years of sobriety, my life was always a roller coaster. I’ve always been a single mother and now we are building a stronger relationship each day. I really look forward to C.I.R.C.L.E.S. every Wednesday when we meet with our Allies and other Champions, spending time, having dinner, talking about what has gone on in our week; just sharing and being really supportive to each other.

What does it mean to be an ALLY?

As an Ally, I receive as much from the Champions as they do from me. Being able to share life experiences and help navigate where they are in their life is so rewarding. It’s not just about teaching as it is about building relationships that grow over time. Relationships that build individuals up and help them to see their value and potential. Being a part of C.I.R.C.L.E.S. is like having an extended family.

Willing to change, they have to have the willingness. This program will change your life if you allow it. It’s a lot of work, it’s not easy, but it’s worth it. You get what you put into it.”
